Connected, resilient, sustainable

Under the Local Government Reform Act 2014, we were entrusted with several key responsibilities, the most significant being the preparation and implementation of the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy (RSES) for the Southern Region of Ireland. This strategy serves as a blueprint for sustainable development, guiding how our region evolves economically, socially, and environmentally. To realise the vision of the RSES, the Regional Assembly collaborates closely with local authorities and state agencies on various strategic initiatives that aim to create a more connected, resilient, and sustainable region.

These initiatives include:

Through these and other initiatives, we are committed to creating a cohesive, sustainable region that enhances the quality of life for all residents, ensuring long-term economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social well-being for future generations.

Regional Spatial & Economic Strategy (RSES)

This strategy serves as the strategic framework for the development of the Southern Region, with its primary objective being the implementation of Project Ireland 2040—National Planning Framework—at a regional level. The RSES aims to promote balanced and sustainable growth throughout the region. Under the Planning and Development Act 2000 (as amended), all City and County Development Plans, along with their variations, must comply with the RSES and national policies. When local authorities draft or propose amendments to development plans, they are required to submit these documents to the Regional Assembly for review.

The Assembly assesses whether the plans are consistent with the RSES and, if necessary, makes formal recommendations for amendments to ensure alignment. As a prescribed body under the Act, the Regional Assembly is also consulted on specific planning matters, playing a pivotal role in guiding sustainable development and influencing regional planning decisions to ensure long-term growth and environmental stewardship.
