Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Pip Breen joined the Metropolitan Mayor of Waterford, Cllr. Séamus Ryan on Monday 20th December to launch an innovative window exhibition at Central Library Waterford of ways in which the EU benefits Waterford and the South East, called “EU in my Region”.
The exhibition tells the story of 10 EU projects and activities in the region, giving a snapshot of the real ways our EU membership has enriched our lives in many ways. Stories include Waterford’s first Global Women’s conference, a Christmas decoration exchange between primary schools through the EU, and the regeneration of the Apple Market in Waterford City. The exhibition is lit up in the windows of Central Library Waterford so can be viewed up to 11pm each evening by passers-by.
Two projects that are co-funded through the Ireland Wales Programme are featured – STREAM and Celtic Routes, along with the story of how Waterford City & County Council maximised ERDF funds to regenerate the Apple Market in Waterford CIty.
Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Pip Breen said: “The EU spends approximately one fifth of its total budget on regional development projects. The south and east of Ireland has reaped the benefits of the ERDF over the years through supports for activities such as sustainable urban development, research and innovation, the environment, energy and culture. We are delighted to see the stories lit up for all to see.”
The launch of the exhibition also marks the launch of the new generation Europe Direct Centre in Waterford, one of seven nationwide and 424 across Europe with the aim to reinforce the important connection between EU institutions and citizens.
The Assembly manages the ERDF Southern & Eastern Regional Programme 2014-20 and will be responsible for managing the Programme for the 2021-27 period.
