The award, presented by the European Innovation Council, honours cities that have demonstrated outstanding innovation and leadership in developing sustainable, citizen-centric solutions.
Cork City’s selection as a finalist is a testament to its progress in implementing Cork Smart Gateway, a comprehensive strategy to enhance the city’s liveability, sustainability, and economic competitiveness through technology and innovation. Key initiatives under Cork Smart Gateway include:

- Development of smart mobility solutions, including real-time traffic information, intelligent traffic management systems, and promotion of sustainable transportation options.
- Implementation of smart energy initiatives, such as smart metering and grid management, to optimize energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions.
- Creation of a digital platform for civic engagement, allowing citizens to connect with city services, provide feedback, and participate in decision-making processes.
Cork City’s selection as a finalist for the European Rising Innovative City Award is a significant achievement that underscores the city’s commitment to innovation and its potential to serve as a model for other cities seeking to embrace smart city solutions.
