European Urban Initiative (EUI), in partnership with the Southern Regional Assembly and the Northern & Western Regional Assembly, is proud to have hosted Day 1 of the EUI Capacity Building Event today, 12/11/2024, in Limerick. The event brings together urban practitioners and local authorities to explore the integration of New European Bauhaus (NEB) principles in heritage regeneration projects.

Aligned with the co-funded ERDF THRIVE – the Town Centre First Heritage Revival funding scheme, the event serves as a vital platform for local authorities to prepare for the next Strand 2 funding call in January 2025, which will offer up to €7 million in financial support for urban regeneration projects in key towns across Ireland.

Supporting Urban Regeneration with NEB Values

As the beneficiaries of the ERDF THRIVE scheme, local authorities are crucial in driving projects that can transform public spaces, preserve cultural heritage, and build sustainable, liveable cities. Through this event, attendees will be equipped with the tools, knowledge, and insights needed to successfully apply for THRIVE funding and incorporate NEB principles into their urban regeneration projects.

Key sessions included a panel discussion on whether NEB is a “buzzword” or a “breakthrough,” and a keynote address by Natasa Christou, Director of Gardens of the Future, Nicosia. In addition to the presentations, participants explored Limerick’s regeneration sites, including Cleeves Riverside Quarter and King John’s Castle, to see NEB values in action.

Preparing for the 2025 THRIVE Funding Call

The January 2025 Strand 2 THRIVE funding call offers a significant opportunity for local authorities to access capital funding for sustainable urban development projects.

“The EUI Capacity Building Event is key to helping local authorities prepare for the upcoming THRIVE funding call,” said David Kelly, Director, Southern Regional Assembly. “We’re equipping them with the tools, strategies, and connections needed to succeed and deliver impactful, sustainable urban regeneration projects.”

Looking Ahead

The Southern Regional Assembly is committed to helping local authorities across the region develop sustainable, future-proof urban spaces through the THRIVE funding scheme.
