Promoting accessible services, liveable spaces and sustainable connections in peripheral urban areas

PROXIMITIES – is an ambitious project dedicated to revitalising peripheral urban areas across Europe, fostering vibrant and sustainable communities. Led by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, the project brings together partners from eight EU countries to support local and regional authorities in redesigning greener, healthier, more accessible, and liveable peripheral urban areas. By improving connectivity, promoting inclusivity, and enhancing environmental sustainability, PROXIMITIES aims to create better places to live and improve the quality of life for all residents.

PROXIMITIES aims to enhance local and regional policies for urban peripheries through five key approaches:

  • 01 –Proximity Economy and Services: Fostering local economies and accessible services within walking distance.
  • 02 –Sustainable and Soft Connections: Developing green transportation and soft mobility options linking core and peripheral areas.
  • 03 –Quality and Liveability of Public Spaces: Emphasising resilience and the natural environment in urban design.
  • 04 –Social and Emotional Dimensions: Building community ties and enhancing social interactions.
  • 05 – Governance and Functional Approaches: Encouraging collaborative policy-making and integrated urban planning.
