The importance of regional collaboration in delivering climate action and sustainable economic growth was highlighted at Climate Transition Towards 2050, a conference hosted by the Southern Regional Assembly. The event brought together elected members, local authority staff, regional stakeholders, business representatives and climate experts to explore practical approaches to achieving climate goals and building resilience across the Southern Region.
The conference formed part of the ongoing engagement between Waterford and Denmark under county-country pairings established through Ireland’s EU Presidency programme. The partnership provides an opportunity to strengthen cooperation, exchange expertise and share practical experience in areas of mutual interest, including climate action, renewable energy and sustainable development.
Reflecting this international dimension, the conference was attended by Kyle O’Sullivan, Ambassador of Ireland to Denmark, and Ole Egberg Mikkelsen, Chargé d’Affaires of the Kingdom of Denmark, reflecting the importance of international cooperation and knowledge-sharing in supporting Europe’s climate transition.
Participants heard presentations on Waterford’s experience in pursuing carbon neutrality and on Denmark’s internationally recognised approach to renewable energy development and community engagement. Discussions focused on the critical role of local leadership, regional cooperation and public participation in supporting the transition to a low-carbon future.
The event featured contributions from Gráinne Kennedy, Climate Action Coordinator with Waterford City and County Council, and Associate Professor Kristian Borch of Aalborg University, alongside a panel discussion titled ‘Local Leadership, Learning and Collaboration’.
Speaking at the event, Cllr Thomas Phelan, Member of the Southern Regional Assembly, said:

By working together across local authorities, businesses, communities and educational institutions, we can ensure that the Southern Region is well positioned to meet future challenges while creating new opportunities for sustainable growth and innovation.”
