Smarter Travel Mark Award

Press Release – Immediate Release

The Southern Regional Assembly has been awarded the Smarter Travel Mark at Bronze level as part of the national programme delivered through the National Transport Authority. The award recognises the Assembly’s commitment to promoting sustainable travel and encouraging greater use of walking, cycling, and public transport among Assembly members, staff, and visitors.

The Smarter Travel Mark is a three-tier system resulting in a bronze, silver or gold award. It rewards organisations that champion sustainable and active travel options for their workforce and visitors on their commute and beyond, resulting in a tangible decrease in single-person car use.

Achieving bronze level status acknowledges the Assembly’s efforts to implement measures that support and enable sustainable transport choices across its office locations. The award also highlights the Assembly’s work in encouraging positive behavioural change through initiatives that make environmentally friendly commuting options more accessible and practical.

Speaking at the Smarter Travel Mark presentation, Cathaoirleach of the Southern Regional Assembly, Cllr Andrew McGuinness, said:

We are proud to achieve the Smarter Travel Mark at bronze level. This recognition reflects the Assembly’s commitment to building a more sustainable, accessible, and environmentally responsible organisation.”

The Assembly’s Smarter Travel Coordinator, Ian Ludlow, added:

This Bronze award is both an achievement and a motivation, and we look forward to continuing to make sustainable travel the easier choice for our members, staff, and visitors.”

Transport currently accounts for 21% of Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions, making it the second-largest contributing sector after agriculture. Through its Smarter Travel initiatives, the Southern Regional Assembly aims to help address this challenge by promoting active travel and public transport options.
